From Stachus to Mozart

To cycle from Munich’s October Festival to Salzburg’s Summer Festival would be a tempting idea – anyhow both festivals do not coincide. This is the only setback on an otherwise interesting and fascinating tour. Two cultures are connected by a cycle tour through the Bavarian Lake District and rolling green hills.
Munich with impressive historic ambience and a lively cultural life is the starting point of the tour. Then you cycle past famous Bavarian lakes, through ancient villages and green pastures. Always with impressive Bavarian Alps as backdrop. Comfortable cycling as you reach Salzburg with Mozart, culture and Austrian culinary delights.

Description of days

Day 1: Individual journey to Munich
Personal welcome briefing and distribution of bicycles. The capital of Free-State Bavaria is famous for shady beer gardens. Enjoy a cool “Maß” and get a taste of coming pleasures.

Day 2: Munich – Bad Toelz ... approx. 60 km

Follow river Isar-cycle path through green forests via Wolfratshausen and Geretsried to Bad Toelz.
Here two main trading routes crossed – river Isar and the old salt route from Reichenhall to Allgaeu – and the former wealth can be traced in splendid town houses.

Day 3: Bad Toelz – Bad Feilnbach / surroundings ... approx. 65 km
Through lovely pastures you cycle around Lake Tegernsee to Gmund on Tegernsee with marvellous panorama view.
Then you cycle past green meadows and Lake Schliersee on gently undulating roads to Bad Feilnbach. The mild climate and more than 30.000 fruit trees contribute to the nickname “Bavarian Merano”.

Day 4: Bad Feilnbach / surroundings – Lake Chiemsee
... approx. 45 km
Today you cycle through the largest peat plot of Bavaria, Kollerfilze. Soon you reach Neubeuern – a place having two crossed boat-hooks as symbol. This clearly referred to the once most important source of income – the construction of boats. Via Frasdorf on the foot of Chiemgau Alps you go to Lake Chiemsee. Tonight you stay on the south-bank of the Bavarian Sea. Enjoy a boat trip to the islands Herren - and Frauenchiemsee.

Day 5: Lake Chiemsee – Inzell ... approx. 35 km
The mountains are getting higher – nevertheless you cycle on almost flat roads. Through “Bergener Moos” a moor on the foot of Hochfelln (1.674 m) the route passes Bad Adelholzen (medicinal spring) to Siegsdorf (natural history museum). Then you keep along the river Rote Traun to idyllic Inzell. So called “Lüftlmalerei” decorative paintings on the houses as well as rich flower decoration please the eyes.

Day 6: Inzell – Berchtesgaden / Lake Koenigssee ... approx. 45 km
Mountains to the right and to the left and squeezed in a green valley, here you cycle on Deutsche Alpenstraße via Schneitzelreuth along river Saalach to Bad Reichenhall (salt spring, Munster St. Zeno, health spa park). Between mighty mount Untersberg and Predigtstuhl the cycle path Salinenweg leads to Berchtesgaden (historic centre, royal castle, Watzmann thermal spa).

Day 7: Berchtesgaden / Lake Koenigssee – Salzburg
... approx. 45 km
Enjoy the beautiful loop tour to Lake Königssee and return to Berchtesgaden. East of Untersberg the old salt-trading route via Marktschellenberg (ice-cave) and St. Leonhard (cable car on Untersberg) you pass the invisible border to Austria.
Welcome to the country of Mozart, visit castle Hellbrunn (baroque water-games, zoo) before reaching the centre of Salzburg.
