Benedict bike path (7 days / 6 nights)
Description of days
Day 1: Wasserburg Individual arrival at the medieval trading town and overnight.
Day 2: Wasserburg – Mühldorf (approx. 50 km) Today we follow the river Inn and reach via Gars and Au the imposing, ancient Augustinian collegiate church St. Maria and its monastery-building, where the pope got musical lessons on the reed organ in his infancy. Via Aschau, the domicile of family Ratzinger from december 1932 till spring 1937, we reach the medieval Inn-town Mühldorf.
Day 3: Mühldorf – Burghausen (approx. 50 km) Via Tüßling we cycle to Altötting. Here we should visit the graved and soot-blackened “Black Madonna” and the chapel place with its clemency-chapel. For the pope Altötting is the heart of Bavaria and one of the hearts of Europe. The route leads us to the birthplace of pope Benedict XVI to Marktl. At the north-end of the market place we can see the birthplace with a plaque. Here pope Benedict was born on 16 april 1927. Our today´s destination is Burghausen where the longest castle of Europe is situated.
Day 4: Burghausen – Waging am See/surroundings (approx. 45 km) Via Raitenhaslach (splendid baroque church) and Marienberg (rococo-pilgrimage church Mariä Himmelfahrt“) we reach Tittmoning. With its well-preserved townscape and the distinctive castle Tittmoning was since 1929 the domicile of family Ratzinger and not for nothing the “dreamland” during the childhood of the pope. The family lived in the so-called “Stubenrauchhaus” (today bank). Today we spend the night in Waging am See/surroundings.
Day 5: Waging am See/surroundings – Chiemsee/surroundings (approx. 30 km) From the warmest lake of Upper Bavaria we cycle via Hufschlag, where the pope lived since 1937, to Traunstein. On 8 july 1951 pope Benedict XVI celebrated his ordination to the priesthood in the parish church “St. Oswald” in Traunstein. Afterwards we cycle to our overnight stay Chieming, where we can visit the parish church “Mariä Himmelfahrt”.
Day 6: Chiemsee/surroundings – Wasserburg (approx. 65 km) Via Seeon with it’s former Benedictine-monastery we cycle to Breitbrunn. Who wants to shorten the today's stage, can renounce Seeon and cycle the first piece directly along the Chiemsee until Gstadt. There we have the possibility to make an excursion to Frauenchiemsee with it’s Benedictine-monastery or resp. also to Herrenchiemsee with it’s “New Castle” (a smaller copy of Versailles) and the former Augustinian monastery. Overnight in Wasserburg.
Day 7: Wasserburg Individual departure or prolongation.
